Short-toed Eagle - Circaetus gallicus (Hungary)

Short-toed Eagle breeds in small number in the hilly areas of the county, but from mid-summer till september they can be found - still in small number - around the well grazed grasslands. A rather common migrant, especially during autumn migration when small flocks of mainly juvenile birds can be seen in the mud of the drained fishponds or - in a wet year like 2010 -, in the flooded grasslands. This bird was photographed in partly flooded seep pasture in the Bihar-plains arae south from the Hortobágy, august, 2010. Equipment: Canon 40D + 4/500 IS lens. Photographer: Simay Gábor.

Red Knots are scarce migrants to Hungary, mainly during the autumn migation, so it is a real rare opportunity to photographe them. This juvenile was a member of a small party in a flooded grassland near Földes. The picture was taken with a Canon 40D + 4/500 IS lens. Photographer: Simay Gábor

Just like the previous species, this one experienced an outstanding breeding season. Juvenile plumaged birds appeared around swallow wetlands near Tetétlen in August, though they bred not here but not far from here in the Hortobágy area. The year 2010 has been extremely wet so far, which provided more than usual breeding habitats for the marsh terns. As we are well after the breeding now,, around the smaller and bigger wetlands juvenile Whiskered Terns can be found in really good numbers. Ospreys are regular migrants in Hungary, when - during they migration - they usualy spent longer periods around the bigger fishpond systems, where they can find plenty of food.
