Why Danube delta?

  1. The largest wetland in Europe covering 5800 km2!
  2. Entirely declared as Biosphere Reserve in the „Man and biosphere” category because is a home of rich mix of Russian, Ukrainian, Bulgarian, Turkish, Greek, Armenian… people in the small villages of the delta.
  3. A vast 1700 km2 reedbed, the biggest such area in the world!
  4. More than 340 bird species observed and a real migration hotspot with an immense number of birds!
  5. The last stronghold of many waterbirds in Europe!
  6. One of the most important breeding areas for Dalmatian Pelicans in Europe with around 100 pairs.
  7. Biggest White Pelican breeding colony in Europe with around 2500 pairs.
  8. One of the best places to see Pallas`s Gull in Europe, which is present all year round in the Delta and had already started breeding in 2008. Other gulls include Slender-billed and Caspian.
  9. Home to about 60% of the World’s Pygmy Cormorant population with over 3000 breeding pairs.
  10. The most important European breeding populations of Ferruginous Duck, Red-crested Pochard, Red-necked Grebe, Glossy Ibis, Spoonbill, Squacco Heron and Whiskered Tern.
  11. One of the most important migration routes and stopover sites along the western coast of the Black Sea for thousands of birds from northern Europe and western Asia!
  12. Regular passage of scarce birds like Demosaille Crane, Borad-billed Sandpiper, Marsh Sandpiper and Terek Sandpiper
  13. Breeding colonial birds include Collared Pratincole, Caspian, Gull-billed, Sandwich and Little Tern.
  14. Some sought-after warblers are abundant breeders (Marsh, Savi’s, Great Reed, Paddyfield)
