Tour information

If you do not manage to see a Lynx on the tour we will refund 1000 euro/person!

Transylvania is an amazing place! It still has large carnivores in its forests and most probably the largest Eurasian Lynx population in Europe is found in the Carpathians especially in Romania. Our tour will be based in the Hargita Mountains but we might do excursions to the Gheorgeni Mountains too. You will be taken to selected locations where we believe there is a chance to see and photograph Lynx. We will use camouflage nets, blinds or even permanent hides. Your guide and the back-up team will be searching for up-to-date infos on Lynx activity.

We use various camera traps (normal, own designed slr and milc) and we regularly capture Lynx on these cameras. During the tour we also offer you the chance to bring along your own camera trap equipment and use it. This way you have even better chance to make images of wild Eurasian Lynx. If you take images of Lynx this way but do not see one, we still refund you the 1000 euro from the tour price.

Timing: Fixed dates but also available upon request
Recommended period is 20 February to 10 March

Duration: 7 days (6 nights)

Logistics: It will be variable on this tour! We will try to maximize the chances and spending as much time out as possible. But we have to consider weather and up-to-date infos about Lynx activity as well to plan each day. Our daily routine includes an early start and we usually sit at various selected spots (in blinds or under trees in camouflage gear) for about three hours in the early morning and late afternoon. We provide camouflage outer layer on the top of your clothing.

Recommended equipment: We suggest that you bring along lenses which range from 400mm to 600mm.

What to bring:
binocular, tripod, proper clothing for winter outdoor photography (gloves, warm hat or hood), winter waterproof boots.

Accommodation & Road Transport:

Our accommodation is the Hargita Bear Lodge which is owned and run by our bear expert Zsolt. He makes sure to have an unforgettable time during your stay. The Lodge is located close to forest. The lodge has en-suite facilities. Transfer from airport will be with car or minivan (depending on group size) while road transport during photography days is by car (4×4 if required) depending on weather conditions and areas to be visited.

The driving distance between Bucharest International Airport and the Bear Lodge is approximately 5 hours while the distance between Cluj Napoca International Airport and the Lodge is 3 and half hours!

Walking: The walking effort is usually moderate, but at some locations it can be even challenging (snow, steepness).

Climate: Late February and early March is still winter in Transylvania! So temperature can be well below zero at night and even in daytime!

Detailed Itinerary

During this tour we have five full days for photography. Our focues will be seeing and photographing Lynx! On this tour you will be taken to selected locations where we believe there is a chance to see and photograph Lynx. We will use camouflage nets, blinds or even permanent hides. We will have at least two sessions each day when we will be waiting to connect with the ‘ghost’. Ferenc Alpár has managed to track, see and photograph Lynx several times but you will obviously need luck as well.

Day 1. The tour begins at Bucharest or Cluj Napoca International Airport, from where we will transfer you to Zeteváralja (Sub Cetate) at the base of the Hargita Mountains where we will stay in the Hargita Bear Lodge for six nights. The Hargita area is primarily inhabited by Székely Hungarians. Upon arrival we will have a discussion of plans for the next days. Your local guides will supply all necessary information about Lynx activity.

Days 2 – 6. You will have five full days of photography. This is the only certain part of the story! It is needless to write itinerary as there is nothing fixed when you are after the ghost of the forest! You have to be prepared to sit for 2-3 hours at each selected locations. You will have your guide with you, he will position you and help you. Usually you will spend 2-3 hours at 2-3 locations each day.

Day 7. Today we will return you to Bucharest or Cluj Napoca International Airport where the tour will end. For more information on what to bring and what to expect contact us!
